Replace missing teeth with Dental Implants
A dental implant is a great choice of treatment to replace missing teeth whilst gaining a natural, healthy-looking smile.
At Martock Dental Practice, our highly experienced implant surgeon, Dr Ewan Davidson, will make a thorough assessment of your dental case and suggest options, from a single tooth to full mouth dental implants.
What are dental implants?
Teeth can be lost for various reasons, such as dental caries, trauma or advanced gum disease loosening teeth. Dental implants are an advanced option for long-term replacement of one or more of your missing teeth. They can be combined with a crown, bridge or even used to hold loose dentures in place (known as implant-retained dentures).
The procedure involves placing a titanium post into the jaw which is then left for 3-6 months to heal and integrate into the bone to provide a solid support for a bespoke tooth that fits on top- this is called the implant crown or bridge.
Can anyone have dental implants?
Dental implants are suitable for most adults who are in good general health with healthy gums. They aren’t suitable for children and people under 18, as the underlying bones are still growing.
Your dentist may not recommend dental implants if you:
• Are a heavy smoker
• Have had radiotherapy to your jaw area
• Have diabetes which is not well-controlled
• Suffer from advanced gum (periodontal) disease
However, each case is different. For example, if gum disease is brought under control or you cut down or quit smoking then dental implants could still be an option. Please let us know and we can discuss this in detail with you.
What are the advantages of having dental implants?
There are many advantages to dental implants.
• Fixed teeth that look and feel like real teeth
• You can enjoy your food better as you did with your natural teeth and
• Smile more confidently
• High success rate- dental implants are considered one of the most successful types of missing tooth replacements in non-smokers.
How long does a dental implant take to place?
The whole process of Dental Implants placement can last between 4 to 6 months. There will be multiple appointments ranging from planning, placement, and reviews for healing followed by restoring the implant with a tooth-coloured prosthesis.
You will be kept thoroughly informed throughout the process and involved in key decision-making.
What happens if you don’t replace a missing tooth?
When we have a gap with a missing tooth, not only do the remaining teeth take the extra stress, but they can also try to move into the gap making it harder to replace the missing tooth.
What was a straightforward replacement would require extra corrective work to provide space for an implant, which leads to longer timeframes and higher costs.
Can a loose tooth be saved?
Tooth mobility happens for a variety of dental reasons. Depending on the cause and degree of mobility, loose teeth can be saved!
Treatments for loose teeth range from extensive gum disease treatments with meticulous oral hygiene maintenance at home or treatments such as Root Canal Treatments which can alleviate infections thereby reducing mobility.
If the tooth is beyond repair, extraction and replacement is the best alternative.
How much is it for a full set of dental implants?
Dental implant treatment is a lifelong investment. Although the costs may be initially high, the outcomes are long-lasting and successful.
A single implant starts from around £2900. Full-mouth dental implants are bespoke for each patient and require a consultation with our Implant Surgeon.
We also offer payment plans where possible, please ask if you need any further information.
