What are Dental Implants?

Teeth can be lost for various reasons such as dental caries, trauma or advanced gum disease making teeth become loose. Dental implants are one of the most advanced option for long term replacement of one or more of your missing teeth and can be combined with a crown, bridge or even used to hold loose dentures in place (known as implant-retained dentures).
The procedure involves placing a titanium post into the jaw which is then left for 3-6 months to heal and integrate into the bone to provide a solid support for a bespoke tooth that fits on top- this is called the implant crown or bridge.

What are the advantages of having dental implants?

  • Fixed teeth that look and feel like real teeth
  • You can enjoy your food better as you did with your natural teeth and
  • Smile confidently
  • High success rate- our patients are extremely happy with the outcome of treatments that have been provided

Can anyone have dental implants?

Dental implants are suitable for most adults who are in good general health and have healthy gums. They aren’t suitable for children and young people under 18 because the underlying bones are still growing.
Your dentist may not recommend dental implants if you:

  • Are a heavy smoker
  • Have had radiotherapy to your jaw area
  • Have diabetes which isn’t well-controlled
  • Suffer with advanced gum (periodontal) disease

However, each case is different. For example, if gum disease is brought under control or you cut down or quit smoking then treatment with dental implants could still be a viable option, please let us know and we can discuss this in detail with you.

FAQ

Q:How long does a dental implant take to place?

Ans: The whole process of Dental Implants in Somerset can last between 4 to 6 months. There will be multiple appointments ranging from planning, placement, reviews for healing followed by restoring the implant with ceramic prostheses. You will be thoroughly kept informed throughout the process and will be involved in key decision making.

Q:What happens if you don’t replace a missing tooth?

Ans: When we have a gap with a missing tooth, not only do the remaining teeth take the extra stress, they can also try to move into the gap making it unfavourable to replace missing tooth. This can mean that what would have been a straightforward replacement would now entail further corrective work to create ideal amounts of space to then place an implant leading to higher costs and timeframes.

Q:Can a loose tooth be saved?

Ans: Tooth mobility can happen due to a variety of dental reasons such as gum infections and infections at the bottom of the roots or a combination of the two. Depending upon the cause and degree of mobility, they can be salvaged. Treatments for loose teeth can range from extensive gum disease treatments with meticulous oral hygiene maintenance at home or treatments such as Root Canal Treatments which can alleviate infections thereby reducing the mobility. However, if the tooth is beyond repair it may have to be extracted and replaced with a suitable alternative.

Q: How much is it for a full set of dental implants?

Ans: Dental implant treatment is a lifelong investment so although the costs may be higher at the outset, the outcomes are more longer lasting hence the cost would reflect this. A single implant starts from £2500, a full mouth implant rehabilitation could range from £16000 onwards. Check with your dentist about the payment options available. Full dental implants are an investment into your future well being, so please do not hesitate to ask any questions
